On the Farm - An update
We have now finished all our cereal harvest, which was relatively straight forward for a change. The weather certainly makes a big difference, and the modern combines aren't long in clearing a fiels in these conditions. Yields this year were slightly below average, but we harvested most at quite low moisture so at least this saves n burning lots of diesel to dry the crops.
We have still to sart the potato harvest, despite irrigating throughout the Summer I would forsee the yields to be a little more than average but hopefully quality will be good enough for the Supermarkets. In the meantime we are now busy sowing winter barley and winter wheat for 2014 harvest. August through to the end of October is a very busy period on an arable famr with lots of long days worked to harvest the crops and get them resown before the onset on winter.
When visiting keep an eye out for what we are doing in the fields and don't be scared to ask I will be only to delighted to explain what we are doing.
Hope to see a lot of you out in the park over the next 6 weeks, and hope this weather continues until the park closes on Suday 27th October.
